Spending your winter as a snowbird on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is one of the best-kept secrets in the whole southern migration. How mild are the winters, really?

Mild enough that "sweater weather" is about as dramatic as it gets. Winter days along the Mississippi Gulf Coast typically land in the comfortable 60s, with plenty of clear, blue-sky afternoons perfect for a walk, a paddle, or an easy morning by the lake. Nights cool off — you'll want a light jacket for the bonfire — but hard freezes are rare and short.

What you won't deal with is snow, ice, or the endless gray you left up north. You'll trade the shovel for a pair of flip-flops that stay by the door most of the season. For a lot of folks, that alone is worth the drive.

Why the Bay St. Louis area beats the Florida and Texas crowds

Nothing against Florida or the Rio Grande Valley — but if you've done a winter in either, you already know the trade-offs. Parks book out a year ahead. Sites get packed rig-to-rig. Traffic crawls. And prices climb every season.

Bay St. Louis offers a different feel. You're on the Coast, but you're not fighting the whole continent for a spot. Here's what tends to win people over:

• Real breathing room. Lake LaCroix opened in 2025 as a family-built resort on a spring-fed lake, not a gravel parking lot. Concrete pads, full hookups, and water views — with a sandy beach, pool, and dog park on site.
• Central location. You're about an hour from New Orleans, 35–45 minutes from the Gulfport and Biloxi beaches and casinos, and 10–15 minutes from Old Town Bay St. Louis, often called "the Key West of the Gulf Coast."
• Freshwater calm. Our lake is inland and spring-fed — no Gulf surf pounding the shore, no casino noise. Just quiet mornings and golden-hour sunsets over the water.
• Easy in, easy out. Two minutes off I-10 Exit 13. No white-knuckle back roads to reach your winter home.

Think snowbird socials, lakeside bonfires with s'mores, Mardi Gras on the bayou when Carnival season rolls in, and a spring fishing rodeo as the season winds down.

What to do from November through March

Snowbird days here are as full or as slow as you want them. A few ideas to get you started:

• Paddle the bayou. Push a kayak or paddleboard off the lake and drift the quiet water on a mild afternoon.
• Chase inshore fish. Redfish, speckled trout, and flounder are all in play in the nearby waters.
• Play a round. The Bridges and Diamondhead golf courses are a short drive for the golfers in the group.
• Wander Old Town. Galleries, the harbor and pier, and easy Gulf-to-table lunches are 10–15 minutes away.
• Take a day trip. New Orleans is about an hour up the road — perfect for a beignet run or a jazz night.
